Dr Ian van den Berg is a registered Educational Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). His private practice is situated at the Mayo Clinic in Constantia Kloof, Roodepoort, in the West Rand.

Ian is fluent in AFRIKAANS and ENGLISH, and all services are offered in both languages!

Ian completed his undergraduate degree as well as his postgraduate studies at the University of the Pretoria (UP), where he earned a BA (ED), BEd (Psych) (Honours), and a MEd (Educational Psychology) degree on Master’s degree level. He then went on and completed a Bridging Course in Business Management on Honours levels, and subsequently gained access, and completed a MCom (Business Management) degree at the then Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), with specialisation in Financial Management. He obtained an PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Johannesburg in 2018.

He has competed several continuous development training courses over the span of his professional career to the benefit of his clients. These include person centred approaches and different techniques including Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Counselling, Ego-State therapy and Clinical Hypnosis, which all forms part of his approach. His PhD study focused on the facilitation of resilience amongst academically excluded higher education students. Ian believes in the innate potential and resilience of all individuals, their ability to harness their inner strength to continue the pursuit of positive growth and development, in their personal, academic and career lives.

Ian has in excess of two decades’ experience as a registered educational psychologist. His initial experience was gained working in the Educational Support Services of the then Transvaal Education Department (TED) in the town of Tzaneen, as well as the Limpopo Education Department upon the amalgamation of all the former educational departments in the new dispensation in South Africa. During this time he focused much of his work on assisting learners with learning disabilities as well as career assessment and counselling services within schools. A great deal of his career was also spent at the RAU, who subsequently merged with the then Technikon Witwatersrand to become the University of Johannesburg. During this time Ian practiced as a Student Counsellor and later as Team Leader: Career Services within the Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD),of the University of Johannesburg. Ian has also spent some time over the past three years as Residential Psychologist and Programme Manager at the Science Career Centre, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, where he led the Psychological Services Team, in the dispensation of a range of career development, therapeutic and psycho-educational assessment services to the broad public and schools within the Gauteng Department of Education.
